SmartGridCity

Did you know that Boulder Colorado was chosen to be America’s first smart city? Have you noticed all the street closures and overhead wire work clogging up traffic in Boulder lately? Most Boulder Citizens are unaware of the fact that Boulder competed for and was awarded an electric infrastructure improvement grant to upgrade the current electrical grid system to a “Smart Grid”. What is the Smart Grid? Well, simply speaking, it is an electric energy grid sintered with a high speed communications network that can monitor the efficiency of energy use at the point of consumption, (homes and businesses), and communicate the information back to a real time automated sense and respond central monitoring station. The monitoring station, a computer, can identify inefficiencies in the system and identify problem lines and substations in the grid. The Smart Grid in it’s most radical application can monitor energy usage right down to individual appliances at a home or a business.

Solar Energy

The grid can also utilize the power produced by solar electric systems on residential and commercial buildings.  The extra solar energy produced but not used by a building can be directed back into the general grid through a new bi-directional smart meter that monitors power into and out of the electrical panel on the building. The best part is that the meter measures the energy the solar equipped building sends back into the grid and the customer is paid for that energy! This system basically makes solar equipped buildings that overproduce at times into small power plants and can take some pressure off of the general grid if there are enough of them in the community.

V2G; Vehicle to Grid Plug in Vehicles

The Smart Grid is also essential in enabling the next generation of plug in electric transportation. Charging stations in residential garages and outside of businesses will become essential in a few years. Smart chargers, time of use rates and advanced meters will help utilities to manage a widespread penetration of residential and commercial plug in hybrids and fully electric vehicles. An electric car running at .5kWh per mile adds approximately 132 fewer grams of carbon per mile than a gasoline vehicle. Plug in hybrid electric vehicle penetration at a rate of 1 vehicle per 100 people could result in a reduction of societal emissions by up to 50,000 tons per year.
